A Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation is a detailed, structured clinical assessment conducted by a qualified mental health professional such as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) to examine a person’s mental, emotional, and behavioral health. It is needed to diagnose and treat emotional, behavioral, or developmental disorders.

Here at Clarity Springs Psychiatry, the Initial Psychiatric evaluation encompasses a thoughtful, in-depth visit focused on truly understanding what you’re going through and what you need next. During this comprehensive evaluation, we’ll talk about your mood, history, daily life, and goals so we can understand what you’re going through and what you hope will change. Together, we’ll begin shaping a personalized care plan that feels supportive, realistic, and aligned with the kind of life you want to move toward.
Should you be found to be experiencing ADHD, Anxiety, or Depression, we will work with you to get things under control and put you on the path to better mental health.
Key Components of the Initial Psychiatric Evaluation
The evaluation generally involves a structured clinical interview and may take several hours over one or more visits. Components include:
Detailed Clinical Interview: Exploration of current symptoms (onset, severity, impact on daily life), psychiatric history, and developmental history.
Mental Status Examination (MSE): A structured observation of the patient’s appearance, behavior, speech, mood, affect, thought processes, and cognitive function.
Medical History & Review: An investigation into physical health, including current medications and underlying medical conditions that could contribute to symptoms.
Psychosocial & Family History: Evaluation of family dynamics, social support, environmental stressors, and hereditary factors.
Safety Assessment: Evaluation of suicide risk or danger to others.
Diagnostic Testing: If needed, this may include lab tests (blood work), brain imaging, or standardized psychological questionnaires.
